*5/18/11 Durango Herald Making us better citizens by STEVE LEWIS/Herald
While it's not just for women anymore, there's no question the League of Women Voters is just as relevant today in our complex world as it was when it was founded in 1920, just six months before the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote. The local chapter turned a landmark 65 this year.
The chapter held its annual meeting May 10 at the Rochester Hotel, courtesy of members Diane Wildfang and Kirk Komick. More than 30 people gathered to hear what the chapter has been up to, hear La Plata County Commissioner Bobby Lieb talk about what's happening at the county level and laud outgoing President Stephanie Huss, who has put in two active years at the helm...

* At our LWVLPC Annual Meeting held in Durango on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, Shelly Hartney, Durango resident and 45-year volunteer for Girl Scouts, requested volunteers to assist her in coordinating a SW Colorado event in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts. Please click girl scouts for more information and responsd directly to Shelly Harney if interested.

* 12/15/11 LWVUS: Patriocracy Just Released Movie about the US Political Divide and Some Possible Solutions (NEW) A new documentary, "Patriocracy," offers a non-partisan examination of the Washington dysfunction and hyper-partisanship undermining America's ability to tackle its most serious problems. Since the movie offers a compelling backdrop to the election year ahead, the LWVUS is partnering with the Leagues of both New Hampshire and South Carolina to show this film just prior to the presidential primaries in their states. President Elisabeth MacNamara will lead a panel discussion following each screening. It is anticipated that national press will be in attendance. All Leagues are encouraged to sponsor their own public showings of this film, which will serve both educational and visibility objectives. Interested Leagues should contact Brian Malone, the producer and head of Malone Media Group, LLC, directly at brian@malonetv.com or 303-888-9649. A small charge is anticipated, but may vary depending on the screening venue and the audience size. Brian Malone is a five-time Emmy® Award winner and has produced more than a dozen independent documentaries for broadcast and cable. His programs have aired nationally on PBS and cable networks, covering the gamut from Grammy-Award-Winning recording artists, to environmental issues, to Native American culture.

Our Mission and Roles

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization encouraging informed and active participation in government. It influences public policy through education and advocacy. We never support or oppose any political party or candidate.

The League of Women Voters has two separate and distinct roles.

  • Voters Service/Citizen Education: we present unbiased nonpartisan information about elections, the voting process, and issues.

  • Action/Advocacy: we are also nonpartisan, but, after study, we use our positions to advocate for or against particular policies in the public interest.

To conduct our voter service and citizen education activities, we use funds from the League of Women Voters of Colorado Education Fund, which is a 501(c)(3) corporation, a nonprofit educational organization.

Our Vision, Beliefs, and Intentions guide our activities.

Member Recognition

*6/8/11 Durango Herald editorial:League of Women Voters Group honored for local activism
The League of Women Voters of La Plata County is an active group of women and men engaged in the political process from the local to the national levels. At every step, LWV volunteers dedicate themselves to informing citizens about important policy and electoral decisions, and encouraging participation in those decisions -- for the betterment of the community. The local league's commitment to this important effort was recognized last month when it received the League of the Year award from the Colorado League of Women Voters at the state convention.
The honor is a fitting affirmation of the activism the La Plata County League consistently demonstrates at the electoral, legislative and administrative levels. Led by President Stephanie Huss, LWV had a robust calendar during the 2009-2011 award period, during which the group held 17 forums to educate voters on candidates and ballot issues, organized meetings to discuss health care and environmental concerns, and submitted comments to the Environmental Protection Agency on proposed cleanup plans for the Four Corners Power Plant and San Juan Generating Station, both situated near Farmington.
This range of activities is representative of the key role the organization plays in influencing civic engagement in La Plata County. That is not only instrumental in producing informed voters + who show up at the polls + but it contributes in no small part to the way the community responds to issues of concern. The resources that LWV has provided the region since its founding in 1945 are invaluable contributions to the quality of life we all appreciate. By taking on a robust agenda of issues important to this community, including: health care, youth and families, water, energy and sustainability, LWV is a staunch guardian of that quality of life.
Congratulations to the League of Women Voters of La Plata County on being rightly honored for its effective contributions.

*5/22/11: Congratulations to the League of Women Voters of La Plata County named "League of the Year 2011" at the LWV-Colorado State Convention in Fort. Collins, Colorado

*5/10/11 LWVLPC Annual Meeting: the awarding of the 1st annual Gladys McBee award to our own Deanna Collins for her excellent achievements as the Environment, Energy & Sustainability chair.

*Friday, November 4, 9-12:30, LWVLPC: Federal Role in Education National Study and Consensus Meeting Christ the King Church, Durango, CO light breakfast provided
Please plan to attend this important meeting of the League of Women Voters of La Plata County. We will have a discussion of the Federal Role in Education, based on local information and materials prepared by the National League and presented by our local study committee. With the Committee's guidance and tutelage, we will prepare our local responses to the Study Questions from National which will then be used as part of the process of developing a League position on this issue. This work of studying and answering consensus questions is how individual members like you and me impact national positions, and we all need to be a part of this process. There are study materials on our web site and they are also available at the Durango Library Reference Desk. If you have time, please look over them. But even if you don't, come to the meeting, listen to the Committee presentation, take part in the discussion and make your thoughts known. This is League democracy at work, and only you can make it meaningful.
To energize you for the hard thinking we will be doing, there will be a light breakfast available when you arrive---pastries, fruit, coffee and tea. I look forward to seeing you there.
Trish Pegram, President LWVLPC
